The Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase are gem and mineral shows that take place annually from late January into February at multiple locations across the city of Tucson, Az. The key event of the showcase is the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show which took place from from February 8-11 this year. This show has been held annually since 1955 when it began in an elementary school with an admission of 25 cents. Over 1500 people attended making it a huge success. The following year it was moved to the Tucson City Fair and Rodeo Grounds and doubled attendance. Almost 70 years later it is now held at the Tucson Convention Center with about 1300 dealers from 49 states and 32 countries and an attendance of over 65,000. The showcase is one of the single highest revenue producing events for the Tucson economy with an estimated impact of $131.4 million. It is still a bargain today at $13 admission. The theme of this year’s show was Pegmatites: Crystals Big & Beautiful. These pictures are some of the exhibit cases which we thought members might enjoy.

For the past five years we have been spending 3 winter months in Lake Havasu City Arizona. While there, we often travel 90 minutes south to the city of Quartzsite. In the summer Quartzsite has 3430 residents. In the winter, that number swells to over 250,000 mostly due to snowbird RVers. There are several Rick shows in Quartzsite in January and February. One of the biggest is the Desert Gardens Rock, Gem and Mineral Show. Desert Gardens brings over 150 vendors from 15 countries and throughout the US together to sell their products.

Paul Krohn's Virtual Tour - August 29 2020

In these incredibly difficult and trying times I do what I have always done best in my attempts to de- stress. I go out and commune with nature in the best way that I know how. I hike. I explore. I observe. I take in as much as I can.

Today I went to the Lockport Nature Trail just North of the city of Lockport on the South side of Slayton Settlement Road just below the Niagara Escarpment. It is a very easily accessible place with ample parking near the road and a network of very well maintained trails.

I had a request to post pictures of the type of glass sponge fossils that can be found at the site I visited yesterday. Here are the two partial specimens I found there 2 weeks ago.

Along Lake Erie shore in Silver Creek NY this morning. Since the level of the lake has risen by about 3 feet or so the nice beach that used to be here is partially submerged and unfortunately the sandy area has been shored up with large stone rip-rap. A

Gratwick Park on the Niagara River before I have to go to work today. Beautiful day. Back in High School everyone used to go here to hang out. You would drive along the pavement and wonder why it had dips about a foot or two deep every few feet or so.

A month or so back there was a substantial rock fall at the Niagara Gorge in Lewiston on the middle gorge trail just north of the Lewiston Queenston bridge. An enormous amount of rock came down from the cliff face and covered the go

This cave I discovered by accident in Lockport one day before work a couple of weeks ago. It’s in an isolated location and judging from where I found it I doubt very many people even know of its existence. The flower photos are also in an isolated location near a fossil collecting locality of mine in Livingston County.
