The Field Trip to the Shelby Crushed Stone Quarry, Medina, NY on Saturday Oct. 3, 2020 has been confirmed.
Please arrive by 7:30 AM to sign paperwork and attend safety lecture. We will enter the quarry at 8:00 AM. No late arrivals are permitted. You may leave at any time. Bring plenty of water to drink. We must exit the quarry by Noon.
The quarry is located at 10830 Blair Road, Medina, NY south of Rte. 31 via Salt Works Rd. Please drive in to the parking area in front of the office building.
Hard hats, steel toed shoes, Reflective safety vest or shirt, eye protection, and long pants are required. Gloves are recommended. Must be 18 years old or older. Gasoline powered equipment is allowed.
Sledge hammers, rock hammers, chisels, pry bars, etc are recommended as this is hard rock breaking. Do not bring carpenter hammers as they can shatter. We will drive into the quarry.
Crystals of Calcite, Dolomite, Selenite, Celestite, and Galena; also fossils and trace fossils have been found.
This has not been a very prolific quarry for specimens, Lockport, Niagara and Flamboro are much better.
Please bring your Covid 19 mask and attempt to social distance (6 foot rule). Please also bring your own pen to sign in.
