Story of Mary Anning’s Fossils- Buffalo History Museum – January 25, 2017- Buffalo, NY

Story of Mary Anning’s Fossils at the  Buffalo History Museum on January 25,2017 at 6pm to 7:30pm. Dr. Phil Stokes of Penn Dixie will speak about Mary Anning’s Fossils. First 50 attendees will get a fossil.

FREE with museum admission which is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors 60+ and kids 13-21 are $5 and kids 7-12 are $2.50.

Who is Mary Anning? Mary Anning (21 May 1799 – 9 March 1847) was an English fossil collector, dealer, and paleontologist who became known around the world for important finds she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English Channel at Lyme Regis in the county of Dorset in Southwest England. Her findings contributed to important changes in scientific thinking about prehistoric life and the history of the Earth. The fossil is now homed at The Natural History Museum but has briefly returned to the Lyme Regis Museum in 2011 for the 200th anniversary of its discovery.:

Buffalo Geological Society Meeting – January 6, 2017- Buffalo, NY

The Buffalo Geological Society Meeting on January 6 at 7:30pm features “Before the Flood” a contemporary film about climate change.

This documentary reflects an incredible three-year journey that took Leonardo DiCaprio and director Fisher Stevens to every corner of the globe where they documented the devastating impacts of climate change and questioned humanity’s ability to reverse what may be the most catastrophic problem mankind has ever faced.   The film is available on the internet free of charge and has been viewed more than two million times since its initial airing. The running time for this movie is 96 minutes.

Held at the Parkside Lutheran Church at Depew and Wallace Streets in Buffalo (use side entrance down ramp).

Buffalo Geological Society Continuing Ed Forum  is November 30 at 8:30am at the Sweet Home Masonic Hall at 621 Sweet Home Road in Eggertsville. The subject is Fossil Prep by Glen LaPlaca who is the owner of Past and Present Rock and Fossil Shop. Breakfast is served at no charge.

Buffalo Geological Society Meeting – November 4, 2016- Buffalo, NY

Buffalo Geological Society Meeting on November 4 at 7:30 features James Boyle speaking on “the Giant placoderm, Titanichthys, a case of dominant fossils”. Devonian placoderm were about 20 feet long and were armoured prehistoric fish and were among the first jawed fish.
