Buffalo Geological Society Fossil Hunting Trip to Cincinnati – April 27-30, 2017

The Buffalo Geological Society 2017 Trip to Cincinnati to collect fossils is April 27-30, 2017. Jerry Bastedo is leading the trip so please contact Jerry for information on making the hotel reservations at the Hampton Inn in West Chester, OH, where a group rate has been setup. Jerry may be contacted at (716) 864-2701 or by emailing him at jcbastedo@gmail.com for the hotel information and updates on the weekend’s events.

The Cincinnati Dry Dredgers will be celebrating their 75 Anniversary this weekend and are planning a couple special field trips, for their members.  We may decide to participate in their trips and everyone will have to become a Dry Dredger member to go on their trips, which have not been determined at this time.  Visits to other sites will be scheduled for the BGS trip.  The Dry Dredgers will be holding a special event and/or dinner on Friday night which many of us will plan to attend.

Buffalo Geological Society Speaker- Impact of Climate Change in Arctic – April 7, 2017- Buffalo, NY

Buffalo Geological Society Meeting is April 7 at 7:30pm features John Briner, Assoc. Professor at UB who will speak on the “Impact of Climate Change in the Arctic- Tales from Greenland.” Briner has traveled above the Arctic Circle more than 35 times for his research.

Held at the Parkside Lutheran Church at Depew and Wallace Streets in Buffalo (use side entrance down ramp.) Open to the public.

Buffalo Geological Society – Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show – March 25-26, 2017- Hamburg, NY

The Buffalo Geological Society Gem Mineral and Fossil Show at the Hamburg Fairgrounds is March 25-26, 2017 with the focus on Garnets which are the NY State Mineral.

Demonstrations, mini mine, crystal jewelry, rock crystals, fossils, beads, gold panning, flint knapping, sand in bottle making for kids and something for everyone. Free parking.

Adults are $5 and children 12 and under are free as well as scouts in uniform. A two-day pass is $7.

March 25- 10am to 6pm * March 26 – 10am to 5pm

Held in the Market and Grange Building.

Super Digg for Fluorescents -April 29, 2017- Franklin, New Jersey

The Super Digg for fluorescent minerals is April 29, 2017 from 9am to 11pm in Franklin, New Jersey- which is a different location than previously. It is adjacent to the Franklin Mineral Museum at 32 Evans Street, Franklin, NJ.

They have made lots of changes this year so make sure you check out the link above.

The Super Digg in the Mill and Buckwheat area is $50 it is limited to 75 people per session and there will be three 3-hour sessions each day. They are also charging $3 a pound in CASH for this area. If you don’t want to do that you can hunt in the Buckwheat area only which is  $25.

All collectors must carry liability insurance such as the insurance offered by the EFMLS to its affiliate clubs (like BGS). If this applies to you, bring a club newsletter showing the Super Digg as a field trip. You must also show a photo ID at registration.  You can register online through April 25, otherwise you will have to register on site and it will cost you $5 more. You can register online without showing proof of insurance but you MUST be able to show insurance proof when you check in.

Collectors are excited because the Mill Dump material is from the Palmer Mine Mill in Franklin from the famous Parker shaft.  It has not be accessed in 20 years.

Finding and Mining Diamonds – Buffalo Geological Society Meeting – February 3, 2017 – Buffalo, NY

Finding and Mining Diamonds will be the subject of the talk at the Buffalo Geological Society Meeting on February 3 at 7:30pm at Parkside Lutheran Church, Depew and Wallace Streets in Buffalo.

Professor Dan Schulze who is a Professor at the University of Toronto studied at SUNY Brockport, Queen’s University and the University of Texas. His research on kimberlites, diamonds and other materials from the upper mantle has taken him to exotic locales such as South Africa, Venezuela, the Aleutian Islands, the Canadian Arctic and Ithaca, NY.
