Sam Ciurca, Buffalo Geological Society Member, To Be Awarded Strimple Award in Fall, 2016 at the Geological Society of America Meeting. Congrats from BGS Sam!!! His claim to fame is Eurypterids – the fossil of NY State.

The Strimple Award recognizes outstanding achievement in paleontology by amateurs (someone who does not make a living full-time from paleontology). Contributions may be an outstanding record of research and publication, making outstanding collections, safeguarding unique paleontological materials through public service, teaching activities in the area of paleontology, and collaborations with others working in paleontology.

Visit Dick Phillips Amazing Rock Garden – July 22-24, 2016

If you didn’t get to go in 2015, make sure you visit BGS member Dick Phillips Amazing Rock Garden as part of the Open Gardens aspect of the National Garden Walk program. 

July 21 and 28 (Thursdays) from 6-10pm

July 22 – Evening Night Walk – 8:30-11pm – See the garden with fluorescent minerals displayed

July 23-24 – 10am to 4pm – Garden Walk Hours (you can visit his garden and others in the area)

You absolutely do NOT want to miss seeing his amazing rock garden. His address is: 346 Pilgrim Road in Tonawanda.

Buffalo Geological Society Awards Nathan Mutka Scholarship Fund – 2016

Buffalo Geological Society Awarded Nathan Mutka a $500 Scholarship.Nathan has been active in the BGS since the age of 11 years, volunteering at the BGS Shows and Auctions.

Nathan attends SUNY Binghamton as an Engineering major with a Geophysics  minor with 3.5 GPA. He is a recipient of the American Legion Award for Community and Academic Excellence. He volunteers at Habitat For Humanity, Friends of the Night People and had given his time at the Pittsburgh Community Spring Cleanup as well as participating in the National Youth Leadership Program. Nathan is also an Eagle Scout and made Geology and the Environment his Eagle Scout Project.
