BGS Field Trip to Egansville Over 4th of July Weekend – Postponed-Cancelled

Field Trips for 2015

1. April 25 – Sterling Hill Super Dig, Ogdensburg, NJ for fluorescents. $21 per person plus $1.50 per lb of rock taken. Must pre-register at  Fluorescent Mineral Capital plus many rare species. Mine and museum tours included. Food and bathrooms available on site. Suggest staying in motels in nearby Franklin, Sussex or Sparta, NJ. (note this is open to the public)

2. May 2 – Penfield Quarry Open House – 746 Whalen Road, Penfield NY. All Ages. Arrive by 6:45 to sign in and hear Safety Talk. Open to the public. Well-supervised children and power tools are allowed. Hard Hat (bicycle helmet for children), safety glasses, sturdy footwear, long pants. Fluorite, Selenite, Calcite, Dolomite, Sphalerite, Galena. Must stay back 20 feet from quarry wall and drop offs.

3. May 22-25 (Memorial Day Weekend) – Hickory Hill, Fonda, NY. Biannual dig for Herkimer Diamonds. $10 per person fee.

4. May 29-30- National Limestone Quarry, Mount Pleasant Hills, PA. Meet at 8:30am, enter at 9:00 AM dig all day one or both days. Please bring specimen to donate to the Quarry owner. Digging two days to work deeper into wavellite layer. Adults and supervised children. Hard hat, steel toed shoes, eye protection, gasoline saws are permitted with safety gear. Bring lunch, water, insect repellant. Expect to find calcite, strontiatnite, wavellite, quartz, a few fossils. Mt. Pleasant Mills is approximately 4 hours and 18 minutes from Buffalo.

5. June 6- Niagara Peninsula Geological Society 49th Annual Gem & Mineral Show, Heartland Forest, 8215 Kalar Road, Niagara Falls, ON. Time: 10 am to 5 pm Cost: $3 (children under 12 free).

6.  June 6-7 –  Wayne County NY Rock and Gem Show, Greater Canandaigua Civic Center, 250 N. Bloomfield Rd, Canandaigua, NY

7. June 13-14 – Pictarin, NY. Rose Road and Selleck Road. Rose Road is in Pitcairn, NY and Selleck Road is in West Pierrepont, NY. Finds last year included fluorescent scapolite, diopside, blue calcite, actinolite, tourmaline and mica. Good hunting. $5 per person. Stay in Clearview Motel in Gouverneur, NY or chain motels in  Fort Drum or Watertown.

8. June 20 – Aecon Quarry, Marmora, Ontario Canada. 6426 REgional Road 14, Marmora. Meet at 8:30am, enter at 9am and dig to 3pm. Must be $18. $10 Canadian. No saws. Must pre-register with Don Lapham. Suggested motel is Moonlight Model in Havelock or chain motels in Belleville. $10 per person.

9.  POSTPONED- CANCELLED -July 3-5- 4th of July Weekend, 2015 – Egansville and Quadeville Beryl Pit, Ontario. Apatite, sheets of mica, amazonite, cleavelandite, titanite, pink calcite and tourmaline have been found. Combine with sightseeing and you have a great holiday vacation. Good hunting.

10. September 19 -Aecon Quarry, Marmora, Ontario Canada. 6426 REgional Road 14, Marmora. Meet at 8:30am, enter at 9am and dig to 3pm. Must be $18. $10 Canadian. No saws. Must pre-register with Don Lapham.


Visit Dick Phillips Amazing Rock Garden at the Ken-Ton Garden Walk – July, 2015

Visit BGS member Dick Phillips Amazing Rock Garden at the Ken-Ton Garden Walk which is July 18-19 from 10am to 4:30pm. AND, you can also visit during the Ken-Ton NIGHT Garden Walk which is July 17-18 from 8:30pm to 11pm when he has areas of fluorescents and UV lights available.

Plus, he is participating in the Open Gardens aspect of the National Garden Walk program which means his garden is open to the public on Thursdays from July 9 to July 30 from 2-6pm.

You absolutely do NOT want to miss seeing his amazing rock garden. His address is: 346 Pilgrim Road in Tonawanda.

Buffalo Geological Society Picnic- August 1, 2015- Williamsville, NY

The Annual Buffalo Geological Society Picnic is being held earlier and at a different location this year. Everything else will be the same meaning it is a potluck with hot dogs, buns and soda, coffee and tea provided. Bring your own place setting – plates, silverware, cups as well as stories, best finds, stuff to sell or trade, free stuff that your house can not harbor any more. Starts at 12:30pm.

Held at North Forest Park at 85 North Forest Road in Williamsville. Park Entrance is across the street from an Army Reserve Station.

Aecon Marmora Mine Field Trip – June 20, 2015- Canada

Saturday June 20, 2015: Aecon Marmora Mine Field Trip:

  • Limited to 24 attendees (12 have already signed up including Don Lapham, leader). Empty spaces not filled by BGS members by June 14 will be opened up to the local Canadian clubs to fill the roster. 16 years of age or older.
  • Access will be 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Please meet at the Mine entrance at 8:30 AM. No late arrivals. There will be a check in check out system.
  • Hard Hats, Steel toed boots (covering above the ankle), eye protection, and orange, green or yellow reflective safety vests are required. Gloves are also highly recommended. Don Lapham has now been certified in First Aid/CPR/AED but if you have similar certification, please bring it with you to support.
  • Pants and shirt sleeves must extend to the ankles and wrists covering both legs and arms. LONG PANTS AND LONG SLEEVED SHIRTS ONLY.
  • A completed roster is to be submitted ahead of time and will be cross referenced to the waiver that is required to be signed upon entering the site on the day of the visit.
  • Photo ID will be required as confirmation of attendance.
  • Each member must provide proof of current BGS membership (please contact Don Lapham if you do not have your Buffalo Club membership card)
  • The use of power tools & micro-blasters is NOT permitted.
  • Aecon allows the collection of specimens in accordance with the generally accepted procedures and practice of Hobby Mineral Collecting only. Acceptable uses for samples collected are for display and exchange only. Aecon is committed to education and will deny access to those who sell specimens for a profit.
  • No trailers or excessive quantities of minerals will be allowed to be collected.
  • As a thank you to Aecon for the privilege of collecting and taking material from this site an entry donation ($10 per collector) shall be collected. A check (made payable to the Bancroft Gem & Mineral Club) for the total amount of each visit donation shall be sent to the Bancroft Gem & Mineral Club Museum.
  • Bring drinks and lunch. All garbage generated during the visit must be removed from the site.
  • Expect to find a plethora of minerals including: garnet, epidote, pyrite, quartz, calcite, magnetite,..
  • Suggest staying at the Moonlight Motel in Havelock or chain motels in Belleville, Ontario the night before.

Niagara Geological Society Show is June 6 from 10am to 5pm at Heartland Forest, 8215 Kalar Road, Niagara Falls, Canada. Admission is $3 and children under 12 are FREE. Features minerals, fossils, gems, jewelry, demostrations, displays, beads and more.
